Caring for patients with congenital heart disease: a nationwide survey of nurses' educational needs

Background/Aims Around one in 130 babies are born with some form of congenital heart defect. Advances treatment have resulted increasing numbers these individuals surviving complex disease; around 90% survive into adult life. In order for patients to receive high-quality care throughout their lives, it is imperative that nurses educated appropriately. This study explored the educational needs who encounter this group patients. Methods A survey designed by British Adult Congenital Cardiac Association was distributed all disease networks UK, as well on social media and via forums allied health professionals. The took place between 4 June 2020 6 July 2020. Responses were analysed using summary statistics. Results total 513 responses received from Band 5 reported a higher level anxiety about caring defect (17.9%) than average population (12.5%). previous 2 years, nearly one-third band staff had no training. Respondents worked non-congenital centres learning manage defects, emergencies simple understanding condition should be an priority. Local taught days identified most desirable means learning. Conclusions While education within specialist appears developed well-embedded, junior (band 5), particularly those working non-cardiac units, being left behind. Easy access information emergency descriptions requirements would benefit rarely Including fundamentals nursing curriculum could provide base which can develop. Preferences accredited sessions support need further development postgraduate education.
